Advanced Training, Sword, healing and internal work

This is a closed workshop for people who have already trained with us.

We will explore the importance of the Cossack sword (shashka) in understanding systema, its mindset, and how it can be used for therapy.

We will go deeper into massage, using both organic and inorganic tools to remove tension from each other.

We will explore the kettlebells, a very Russian fitness tool that so few people use correctly.

And we will also do problem solving. For those that wonder how professionals use systema- here’s your chance to dip into that world.

As always, we will tie up the information covered to the real life applications.

Central London. Nearest tube: Baker Street. Precise location will be provided to participants. We were very fortunate to secure this amazing facility with massage tables, private treatment rooms, and big spaces for demos.

Massage is a critical part of warrior training. In many styles, systema included, the training would start with massage before it progressed to combat skills. Even now, most Russian Martial Arts classes in Russia include elements of massage.

Learning healing skills keeps you balanced. If one learns how to break things, but not how to fix them, the incurred disbalance will stop the journeyman from getting the deeper aspects of the art.

Warrior massage has slightly different goals and timeframes from the other forms of massages you have experienced. We need to diagnose, and repair quicker. Massage is also a learning tool for both participants, and can be used to build trust in the tribe.

While it is usually quite pleasant, there are some precise points to it:

  • To repair damage.
  • To speed up healing.
  • To remove tension not just from the visible muscles, but also from fascia and internal organs.
  • To balance energy.
  • To balance the three main fluids in the body.
  • To improve the elasticity of your circulatory system.

In this intro class we will learn

  • The right mind-set and the common traps and dangers when practicing healing arts;
  • Importance of breath in massage;
  • What is the Neutral state;
  • Self massage;
  • Universal 10 minute treatment to speed up recovery after training;
  • Specific strokes for dealing with surface tension in the muscles;
  • Intro to external organ balancing;

We will not do the stick massage in this intro session, but we will mention why and how some tools can be excellent to assist your massage.

Open to anyone who has had a massage, or who has attended a dance class, martial arts class or a yoga practice before.

Knife Awareness

This is a community service event for our friends and neighbours in Billericay, in response to a recent stabbing incident in Lake Meadows Park.

This will be a three hour interactive workshop.

What to bring: Comfortable clothes, trainers, whatever you may wear to the gym, as we will move around! Water. We will provide training knives.

What to expect, and to accept: we will talk, and we will also move. There will be contact. If you cannot bear getting touched, this is not for you. We will also put you in a controlled, but unfamiliar situation where you are expected to be a little uncomfortable. While we are professional and experienced instructors, and make every effort to keep participants safe, any activity of this sort is higher risk than sitting on the couch. By participating you to accept the risk of injury.

We may also take photos or videos, and if you do not want to be photographed, we will respect that-  please say it!

To ensure a good safe educational experience we will limit the attendance of each session.

Age: the first two sessions will be for adults 18+.

I understand many of you want your kids trained as well, and I will organise further sessions for the parents together with children, but teaching adults, and kids requires a rather different approach.

  • What you will learn:
    • To manage stress during conflict – because violence is often sudden, unexpected and always horrible;
    • To take action and not freeze while under extreme stress;
    • To learn to trust your intuition;
    • To understand when negotiation is coming to an end and when action is required;
    • To know what to do when violence is unavoidable;
    • To learn how to survive. This is about being able to walk away from the horror of a violent encounter. This is not Hollywood, it is reality.

In this event we will consider what to do when violence is unavoidable.

Violence is never a good choice, but sometimes it is the least bad choice you can make.

We will explore the philosophy, strategy and decision making process.

We will certainly consider tactics, techniques, and the aftermath.

Best practices from civilian and military protocols will be presented.

In this four-hour workshop we will go through the foundation of Systema for complete beginners.

You will learn to identify stress and fear, and deal with it, using a unique Russian methodology.

You will get to know your body (yes, even if you are a yoga practitioner, or a ballet dancer :-)) and learn to trust it, trust it enough to listen to the signals it sends you, and to allow it to move to get you out of trouble.

 

And we will give you the tools to deal with some common street scenarios. This training  will significantly improve your chances of coming home. Not winning. Coming home. Feel the difference?

What results can you expect from this seminar?

We are realistic about the amount of knowledge you can absorb in a few hours. Our goal is to show you what tools and concepts exist, and how you can develop them further. Here is what you will get:


You will increase your awareness of self, and of the world around you, and will be able to be a fuller part of it.

You will learn how to overcome fear and hesitation. Fight or flight is good. Curling into a ball is not.

You will train yourself how to make positive, smart decisions and to take non-aggressive action.

You will find out how to control nervousness, discomfort and stress when faced with the threat of emotional or physical violence.

You will be able to deal with a few common attacks, and never again be a part of the “all of a sudden…” scenario.

At the end of our workshop on 3/4 June, you will leave the class exhilarated, empowered and happy with your results. Of course everyone is welcome to stay after the seminar to celebrate our success and to socialize with new friends over a drink and a bite to eat.

What we offer is not karate, not taekwondo, not judo, not techniques, and not fighting! Our goal is to help you understand your own capability, your own body and your own movements. It means thinking for yourself and finding your own best solution under the guidance of a professional instructor. When faced with stress, we humans respond in one of three ways: fight, flight or freeze. In modern society, with the rise of criminality and the great reduction in personal private space, we are unfortunately conditioned to fall into the freeze mode, with the expectation that someone else will solve our problem(parents, police, doctors, politicians, etc.) People have a strong need for safety, even when living in a “civilized” country. Sadly, there are more and more people out there who ignore the laws and behave aggressively towards peaceful citizens and even children. Even in the relative safety of Vienna, there are some parts of the city you might not want to walk through alone in the dark. And as your common sense would suggest- you shouldn’t 🙂
This is why it is vital to rely on yourself and learn to master resilience, which is the ability to return to our normal baseline of stability, both physically and emotionally, during and after acute stress. Doing this is also linked with positive health markers and increased disease resistance.

David has been teaching civilians and professionals since 1995, helping his students to learn more about themselves, and to lead a fuller, safer life.  He has lived and trained with some of the greatest martial artists in the world – and in my eyes he is one of the few who have fully grasped the art of teaching. THEME: Building resilience through Systema

Resilience (other than a trendy word, often misused, and rarely applied) is the ability to return to our normal baseline stability, both physically and emotionally, during and after stress. It is also linked with ‘positive health’ and increased disease resistance.

When faced with stress, we respond in one of three ways: fight, flight, or freeze (aka the Possum response). In modern society, we are conditioned to fall into the freeze mode, with the expectation that someone else will solve our problem- police, doctors, politicians… We will consider what consequences the possum response has for us, and explore the more practical solutions.

Resilience is largely about body awareness and not rational thinking. Individuals vary in their capacity to recover quickly after crises and setbacks. Even at our sharpest, if we don’t listen to our body, we might not bounce back as quickly from adversity as someone who is more attuned to their body’s physiology.

TOPICS: We will focus on a progression of psychological and technical drills. You will learn to understand the physiological and emotional changes that occur when we experience stress, real or perceived, and you will explore where your limits really are.
We will work with solving problems in stressful situations with the ‘correct state’: You will train how to take positive, non-aggressive action and control fear, discomfort and stress when faced with a threat of emotional or physical violence.

This is not a lecture or an exercise in philosophy.

How do you retain your wits in a stressful situation? How do you solve problems when under attack, exhausted, confused, scared?

What is the right “state”?

We know the principles of physical effectiveness: Movement, Breathing, good Posture, and No Unnecesary Tension. In fact, those principles apply to everything, from dancing to riding a bike, from singing to golf, from making love to combat. Why is it so difficult to stick to those concepts? How are they connected to our emotions, and our internal state?

We will progress from philosophy and drills, to practical problem solving.

Understanding State Change part 3

Meet at Billericay train station at noon. Training in Lake Meadows park, 5 min walk from the station. Trains from Liverpool St station to Southend/Victoria station. 30 minute ride to Billericay. If you are driving, the post code is CM12 0AN.

While combat elements will be covered, this is not what this training session is about.

Training in the park in Billericay, rain or shine.
Meet at train station at noon, walk to the park, and train.
Breathing, form, movement, striking. Learning aides will be used.

As we get deeper into the State Change syllabus, the words become less meaningful, experience is where we learn.

There are reasons why we are doing it in the park- and it’s not to save the costs of the training hall.

Please bring change of clothes, towel, water, and light lunch.

While this is mainly aimed at senior Systema GB students, new instructors (and instructor candidates), students from other Systema clubs are welcome.

This is a four hour session where we will attempt to turn the attention inward, and work on the state change.

Work covered in the previous workshop will be explored further, and quite a few new things will be added.

Movement, breathing, internal work and dealing with your emotions- and connecting all this to the combat situations.

Expect to be annoyed, challenged, irritated- and to enjoy it!
